Keeping Muskegon’s Story Alive
The Muskegon Lumber Queen Celebration brings our community’s history to life by connecting the people, stories and spirit of Muskegon’s lumbering past with the generations shaping its future. Built around a beloved local theatrical tradition, the celebration uses performance, music, education and community participation to make history something to experience—not simply something to remember.
Today, the Lumber Queen is growing into more than an annual production. Through the Friends of the Muskegon Lumber Queen, local partners, volunteers, educators, performers and supporters are working together to introduce young people to their community’s heritage while creating new opportunities for people of all ages to participate. Our purpose is simple: honor where Muskegon has been, strengthen the connections that bring us together today, and help the next generation understand that this community’s story now belongs to them.
Our Story
The Muskegon Lumber Queen began in 1975 as a celebration of the people, determination and lumbering heritage that helped build our community. Fifty years later, the production returned to the stage, bringing together performers, volunteers and community partners who discovered that this story still has something important to say.
What began as the revival of a local theatrical tradition is becoming something larger. Today, we are using the Lumber Queen to connect generations, introduce children to Muskegon’s history, celebrate community involvement and create new ways for people to participate in keeping our heritage alive. We are preserving a story from our past by giving it a purpose in our future.
